Panels, Workshops and Courses

Content Tracks Help Attendees Maximize Conference Experience

To address the diverse needs of attendees, workshop, courses and panels were developed and scheduled in three distinct tracks: Best Practices, Leadership Panels and CIS specific courses based on the new CIS Total Quality Standards.

Leadership Panels

Experts in the field of youth development will serve as panelists in these sessions. They will explore national policy and education issues, such as the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Federal funding strategies and trends, as well as organizational development challenges, including resource development and other nonprofit leadership issues. Attendees will hear nationally prominent individuals and officials speaking on a variety of facilitated panels. These interactive sessions will also create meaningful dialogue among state CIS directors, board members, as well as executive directors and sector organization leaders.

Best Practices Workshops

Built upon findings of recent ground breaking research conducted by the National Dropout Prevention Center and Communities In Schools, workshops in this track will be applicable for researchers and policy makers, as well as youth development practitioners and CIS network affiliates. Participants will learn about significant dropout risk factors and evidence-based dropout prevention programs, and have opportunities to learn and apply the critical elements of best practice to several effective strategies such as mentoring, service-learning and family strengthening.

CIS Courses

Designed primarily for local CIS affiliate members, board members and staff, courses in this track will immerse learners in newly developed materials based on the new Total Quality System standards. To help attendees retain content and put lessons learned into practice immediately, workshops will be presented using principles of adult learning and master trainer methodology.

The convergence of public policy, federal funding, innovative services, and a growing body of research provides fertile ground for cultivating solutions to the graduation crisis. The nature of the problem requires a comprehensive and integrated approach to student support services and coordinated school reform strategies. Scholars, researchers, and policy makers will present solutions to the graduation crisis by discussing national models and policy shifts that are vital to support institutional change in educating students.

Painting the Landscape for Workforce Development and the Future of Education

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

Leaders and scholars on educating America’s workforce will discuss changes on the horizon as public education faces an elevated role in preparing the nation’s future workforce, including preparing for post-secondary education. To have a focused impact, providers of student support services must share an understanding of where public education is and needs to go. Trends in educational reform and redesign will be discussed, including the unique role of student support services in facilitating this transition.

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

Representatives from foundations will provide perspective on grantor/grantee relationship building and give tips on how to approach potential funders. This session will provide a forum for student support service providers to dialogue with foundation funding representatives.

Federal Government Funders Panel

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

Federal government officials will provide perspective on building relationships with federal agencies and will discuss available resources, including funding, technical assistance and research. Audience members will have a chance for dialogue with funders.

Non Profit Business Administration: The Appeal of a More Corporate Model

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations

Nonprofit MBA faculty and experts will address the recent shift in nonprofit management toward more corporate approaches and the resulting increase of private sector interest in investments in infrastructure, capacity building, evaluation and expansion efforts.

Evidence Based Practices and Bringing Research to Practice

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

Scholars and researchers will explain how the results of their studies have influenced changes in practice. This session will highlight the movement to incorporate evidence based practice in youth services as the most efficient and effective path to positive youth outcomes.

Achievement Gap

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

The “achievement gap” in academics persists between minority and disadvantaged students and their white counterparts. Expert panelists will explore the history of institutionalized racism, cultural carriers, and summarize what we have learned about successfully addressing this gap.

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

Policy experts will discuss implications of reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 at the federal, state, and local levels. The unique opportunities to promote success through student support services will be explored. Audience members will be expected to develop thoughtful questions and to participate in the discussion.

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

Racial Equity and Youth Development Leadership Project

 

Target audience: Veteran leaders from CIS affiliates, state offices and leaders from partner organizations.

CIS Leadership and The Aspen Institute Roundtable on Community Change will describe a new partnership to facilitate CIS's efforts to incorporate a racial equity agenda into its program operations. During this session the Roundtable's structural racism framework will be shared along with CIS's preliminary action plan and begin what will be an ongoing discussion within the CIS network.

Session participants will receive a broad overview of a comprehensive study conducted by the National Dropout Prevention Center and Communities In Schools on Dropout Risk Factors and Best Practices in Dropout Prevention.

What are the Significant Risk Factors that Increase the Likelihood of Dropping Out of School?  

Session participants will learn the latest research on risk factors that predict an increased likelihood of dropping out of school. Risk factors are presented across two broad domains: 1-family and individuals and 2- school levels. The information will have implications for conducting needs assessments and selecting or designing programs to mitigate risks.

Exemplary Programs in Dropout Prevention: Big Brothers Big Sisters

Participants will learn about Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring, an exemplary program identified for its effectiveness in mitigating multiple dropout risk factors. Discuss the results of the recently completed BBBS School-Based Mentoring Study. What are the impacts? What steps will be taken to extend the impacts?

Exemplary Programs in Dropout Prevention: Across Ages

Participants will learn about Across Ages, an exemplary program identified for its effectiveness in mitigating multiple dropout risk factors. The unique feature of Across Ages is pairing a vulnerable youth with an older adult mentor (age 50+). In addition, youth engage in community service activities, participate in life skills training and enjoy activities that involve family members.

Exemplary Programs in Dropout Prevention: CASASTART
3

Participants will learn about CASASTART, an exemplary program identified for its effectiveness in mitigating multiple dropout factors. CASASTARTsm is a school-centered collaborative approach to help high-risk 8 to 13-year-olds succeed by using a comprehensive service menu and youth development strategies.

Exemplary Programs in Dropout Prevention: Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program

Participants will learn about the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program a cross-aged tutoring program in which secondary school students who are at risk of dropping out of school tutor younger elementary students. The program reduces dropout rates, enhances students’ basic academic skills and perception of self and school, decreases student truancy and disciplinary referrals.

Exemplary Programs in Dropout Prevention: Teen Outreach Program

Participants will learn about the Wyman Teen Outreach Program (TOP), a national best practice identified for its effectiveness in reducing school drop-out and teen pregnancy. The Wyman TOP serves youth, ages 12-17, through comprehensive youth development and community service learning. Programs are held within school, after-school or in community- based settings.

Exemplary Programs in Dropout Prevention: Career Academy

Participants will learn about Families and Schools Together (FAST), an exemplary program identified for its effectiveness in mitigating multiple dropout risk factors. FAST is a collaborative prevention and parent involvement program designed to build social and family relationships and protective factors.

Participants will learn about Families and Schools Together (FAST), an exemplary program identified for its effectiveness in mitigating multiple dropout risk factors. FAST is a collaborative prevention and parent involvement program designed to build social and family relationships and protective factors.

Participants in this interactive workshop will learn and have the opportunity to apply the critical elements of best practice for after school strategies.  This information will facilitate use of an evidence-based approach for selecting, designing and implementing effective after school strategies.

TQS Orientation

This course will provide an overview of the new CIS Total Quality System (TQS), a comprehensive and integrated system of standards, policies and procedures that guide the business and site operations of CIS affiliates.  TQS will go into effect July 1, 2008 and replace the CIS Quality and Standards process.

CIS Orientation

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff as well as CIS site leaders and teams, volunteers and partners.

This course presents a thorough orientation to Communities In Schools and its processes.   It is designed for staff members, volunteers, board members or other community members who have recently been introduced to CIS and wish to learn more about it. Participants will also receive a brief introduction to the tools on the CIS intranet.

Starting a CIS Community

Target Audience: CIS affiliate and state leadership.

This course explains the Total Quality System local affiliate policies and procedures that outline the step-by-step process for developing a new CIS community.

CIS Identity Basics

Target Audience: CIS affiliate and state leadership.

Consistent use of the CIS mission statement, logo, mark and other identity items is critical for network cohesion and branding. This course is designed to familiarize participants with general branding standards and provide them with the tools to promote CIS in a way that is consistent with the network. It will also provide guidelines on the development of CIS printed and web-based materials including stationary and promotional items, as well as a review the CIS Graphics Guide.

Starting a Nonprofit  

Target Audience: CIS affiliate, state leadership and their staff.

This course is designed to define and explain the 501 (c) (3) incorporation process as it applies to new affiliates of a non-profit federation. Articles of incorporation, by-laws and forming a board are some of the topics that will be addressed.

1.5 hrs.

The Executive Director’s Role  

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will provide an overview of the various roles and responsibilities of the executive director. It will cover the relationship of the executive director to the board as well as the annual performance review process.

Building a Successful Board of Directors

 

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will describe the fundamental steps required in building a successful Board of Directors including board composition, recruitment strategies and orientation.

Ensuring Successful Board Operations

 

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will help participants ensure that the board of directors operates professionally and conscientiously in setting sound policy, especially in personnel and fiscal matters. Board meeting policies and procedures will also be discussed.

Preparing for Strategic Planning  

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will discuss how to prepare your organization for strategic planning. Topics discussed will include knowing when your organization is ready for planning based on the organization’s level of development, resources, time and board members’ commitment and availability. Hiring outside consultants will also be discussed.

Crafting a Strategic Plan

Target Audience: CIS affiliate, state leadership and their staff.

This course will outline the steps involved in devising a strategic plan based on the core functions of a CIS affiliate. The process for periodically reviewing and revising the plan will be discussed, as well as the relationship of the strategic plan to the annual operations plan.

Crafting an Annual Operations Plan

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff as well as CIS Site Leaders and Teams.

This course will outline the steps involved in creating an annual operations plan.   Topics will include the core plan components and it s relationship to the strategic plan, site plans and employee work plans.

Planning for School and Community Partnerships

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff as well as CIS site leaders and teams

Learn about the key elements required to successfully form and maintain school and community partnerships. Course participants will explore the ins and outs of written agreements, identify key school and agency personnel that need to be involved and discuss the benefits of strategic partnerships.

Understanding Resource Development  

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will focus on the fundamental elements of a resource development plan including assessing organizational needs, identifying responsible staff and board members and defining the process and timeline.

Planning and Executing a Successful Marketing Program

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

course will focus on the fundamental elements of a marketing plan including identification of key markets and targeted audiences. Participants will discuss tactics for cause-related marketing, advertising, development of collateral material and maintaining a presence at key events, including conferences and trade shows.

Planning for Expansion of CIS Sites

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff as well as CIS site leaders and teams.

This course will consider strategies for managing, expanding and developing sites.   Participants will discuss goal setting for growth, roles and responsibilities, appropriate timelines and methods for evaluating success at a CIS site.

Planning for Quality Youth Programming and Services

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff as well as CIS site leaders and teams.

This course will discuss goal setting for youth programming. Session participants will explore various methods and key considerations in determining the best strategies for youth programming and services.

The Basics of Program and Evaluation Design

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will review the basics of program design planning, including the development of vision statements, goals, objectives and strategies.   Participants will also learn the basics of program evaluation, including the formulation of evaluation questions and how to use evaluation data to improve programming.

The Basics of Data Collection Planning

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

This course will review the concepts of data collection and reporting as they relate to program and evaluation design. This session will provide participants with the basics of data collection planning, such as determining what data to collect, how to collect it, and how to analyze it to make programmatic decisions.

Achieving Your School and Community Partnership Goals

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

Effective partnerships are not guaranteed with the signing of a written agreement. Partnerships require effective collaboration, negotiation and at times conflict resolution skills. This course will provide tips and advice on how to make the most of your school and community partnerships, as well as how to evaluate their success.

Setting and Achieving Your Resource Development Goals

Target Audience: CIS affiliate and state leadership and their staff.

This course will explore the various resource development options available to nonprofit organizations as well as the factors to consider when selecting which options are best for your CIS affiliate.

Building Visibility Through Public Relations and Media Relations

Target Audience: CIS affiliate and state leadership and their staff.

This course will explore the most effective methods of generating publicity. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss strategies for message development, crisis communications, media relations and publications.

CIS22

Achieving Your Managing and Developing CIS Sites Goals

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff, state office staff as well as CIS site leaders and their teams.

This course will focus on the process of managing existing CIS sites as well as developing additional site and additional services at existing sites. Topics will include managing the six steps to the CIS process, gaining school and stakeholder buy-in and barriers to success.

Data Management and Reporting Using the GNC – Office Level

Target Audience: CIS affiliate and state leadership and their staff.

This course will provide hands on training that will review the elements of the as it relates to data collection, reporting and data usage for program improvement and fund raising.   Participants will learn about navigating the GNC to ensure that data entered generates required reports, using data to improve communication and decision making and dealing with the challenges that may arise in this process.

Employee Policies and Procedures

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff, CIS site leaders and teams and partners.

Course participants will learn about the policies and procedures recommended when hiring, employing and firing employees.   Topics will include criminal background checks, confidentiality issues and general policies and procedures that are necessary for risk reduction.

Preparing Staff and Volunteers: Providing the Knowledge and Tools They Need

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff as well as CIS site leaders and teams.

Learn about the various options for providing orientation and job training to staff members and volunteers.   Participants will review the latest in CIS- specific training materials and discuss options for ensuring that all staff and volunteers are well prepared and receive continued professional development.

Enhancing Staff Performance Using   Work Plans and Periodic Reviews

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will provide information on developing staff work plans and performance reviews aligned to the goals and objectives of the annual operations plan. Participants will explore the legal and ethical concerns in conducting employee evaluations, and ways of addressing conflicts during the employee review process.

Volunteer Management

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams and their partners.

Volunteers are essential to the work we do. This course will provide an overview to effective recruitment, training and management of volunteers.

Fiscal Management Basics

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

Course participants will learn about the fundamental concepts of fiscal management, including adhering to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).   They will also learn about the elements of a budget, basic financial reporting and about the roles and responsibilities of staff and board members.

Budget Design

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

This course will teach participants how to design a budget based on their annual operations plan.    They will also learn how to use the annual operations plan to project revenue and expenses based on program initiatives, fundraising, and administrative costs.

Introduction to Financial Risk Management

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

Participants will learn about:

•  applicable laws and regulations including the Sarbanes Oxley Act;

•  how to incorporate processes to protect the organization from risk including fraud, embezzlement and bankruptcy, and;

•  the importance of implementing a system of internal fiscal control procedures that adequately safeguard and manage the organization’s assets.

Understanding Your Audit

Target Audience: CIS affiliate leadership, state office leadership and staff and partners.

Course participants, through the audit process, discuss the importance of an annual audit or limited review and look at common issues faced by nonprofits undergoing an audit.

Assessing Needs at the School

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

Needs assessments are key to the development of an effective Annual Site Operations Plan.   This course will walk participant through the steps necessary to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment through gathering and analyzing relevant data.

Annual Site Operations Planning and the CIS Theory of Change

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

The Annual Site Operations Plan for Comprehensive Sites, or the Annual Service Plan, in the case of Developing Sites, provides a blueprint for the services provided at a site. This course will utilize the CIS Theory of Change in the development of a the site operations plan that incorporates both Levels I and Level II services.

Selecting and Preparing Site Coordinators to Deliver Services

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

This session will help staff prepare for service delivery at a school site. Ensuring that site coordinators have the tools and support necessary to successfully implement the Annual Site Operations plan is vital to the success of a site. Well written job descriptions for site staff, negotiating for space, essential work tools, access to data, resources and support for site coordinators with school leadership are necessary before services are provide.

Partnerships and Written Agreements at the Site Level

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

Effective implementation of services and resources at the school site requires successful community partnerships. Participants will learn about the key elements required to form and maintain successful community partnerships and explore the ins and outs of written agreements.

This course will provide CIS site coordinators and staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement the CIS Annual Site Operations Plan most effectively.  Topics will include: building relationships with school staff and service providers; implementing Level 1 Prevention Services to meet school-wide needs; monitoring, evaluating and adjusting the Annual Site Operations Plan; and reporting progress to school and CIS leadership.  TQS requirements for Comprehensive Sites will also be discussed.  Although Level 2 services will be mentioned briefly in this course, a more detailed discussion of Level 2 service implementation is included in the course, "Planning and Coordinating Level 2 Intervention Services .

Effective Level II Service Implementation

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

Level II resources and services are intervention services targeted for specific students with identified risk factors such as poor academic performance, poor attendance, or frequent misbehavior. This course will guide participants through the planning and implementation of Level II services based on the Annual Site Operations Plan.   Participants will learn about case management, the referral process, developing and monitoring individual student plans, confidentiality, and parent relationships.   TQS requirements for Comprehensive Sites will also be discussed.   Basic Site Coordination and Level I services and resources are discussed in the course “Basic Site Coordination and Including Level I Prevention Services.

Data Management and Reporting Using the GNC – Site Level

Target Audience: CIS affiliate staff as well as site leaders and teams.

This course will review how the Site Level GNC Data Management Tools aid in the collection, reporting and use of data for site coordination, Level 1 service tracking, staff and volunteer management, and reporting.  Participants in this hands-on session will practice using the site administration, staff/volunteer tracking, and reporting functions of the GNC Data Management Tools. This will build participants’ skill levels to use these tools effectively at their school sites and to maximize the benefit of the GNC for the site coordinator.

The Performance Learning Center (PLC) is a small, non-traditional high school geared toward students who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting. The first part of the session will focus on the business side of running a rural affiliate and will cover resource development, the challenges posed by geographic isolation and grant-seeded initiatives and sustainability. The second part of the session will focus on program services, needs assessments and maximizing human capital.

This two-part session is designed to highlight the unique realities experienced by CIS affiliates in urban communities, with a special emphasis on affiliates operating in large, urban school districts. The first part of the session will focus on creative strategies for establishing and maintaining school district and community partnerships, resource development, and marketing and public relations. The second part of the session will focus on building a sustainable organizational structure to support program growth and expansion.
